Arena 3000 and emulators

Comments, problems, suggestions about Oric emulators (Euphoric, Mess, Amoric, etc...) it's the right place to ask. And don't hesitate to give your tips and tricks that help using these emulations in the best possible way on your favorite operating system.

Arena 3000 and emulators

Post by Symoon »

I noticed something strange with the game Arena 3000 from Microdeal.

When playing with Euphoric on keyboard, and the player goes in the south-west direction (so pressing down and left arrows), shooting (spacebar) doesn't work.
Same with Oricution 1.2
But on a real Oric, it works!

Actually some keys combinations seem to react faster on emulators, while at least this one doesn't work at all.

Anyone ever noticed something similar with other games?

Works for me. I have one version that seems to work with Oric-1 ROM. The other works with Atmos ROM. Both seem to work OK.

See if this file works any different to yours.

On my computer it works, the code of the Arena program uses the writing routine for the sound processor to directly access the keyboard map. for the concurrency of the keys, which can be a problem for technical translation to a modern keyboard.

Thanks for the replies! Steve, I checked your version and I have exactly the same ;)

I will try on another PC, beside a PC problem or configuration, I don't see why it would work on your computers and not mine.
What emaultaor (and version) are you using? Might also be I'm using rather old emulators.

So, I just tested with ORicutron 1.2, on another PC, and... It works.
This goes beyond my knowledge, but Kenneth you seem to have found the problem right!

Could totally be a PC keyboard issue, that's why there are "gamer keyboards" with N-Key rollover.

Back when Duke Nukem 3D was released, my PC at the time would not allow me to strafe right when crouching for example, and there are some modern keyboards which don't allow pressing W and space at the same time which is problematic for many modern games that use W to move forward and Space to shot.

If you have some other USB keyboard laying around, give a try and see if that solves the problem (and probably fails for some other combinations of keys).

I tested my "faulty" PC with an USB keyborad and everything worked fine indeed.
I would never have guessed that this problem could be from the PC hardware!
