Flood-it [raxiss]

Post by rax »

Hi :),

Flood-it is a game I discovered almost by accident while exploring the world of Abstract Strategy Games.

At first, it didn’t impress me much — to be honest, I even passed it by. But later I gave it another chance and realized that it actually deserves attention.

For me, it’s a small experiment — a way to play with logic, colors, and minimalist gameplay.

What is Flood-it?
Flood-it is a grid-based puzzle game where your goal is to flood the entire board with a single color, starting from the top-left corner. With each move, you choose a new color and “flood” all connected tiles of the same color. The challenge is to complete the board using as few moves as possible.

I’d love to hear your thoughts — what do you think?

Probably one of the most beautiful games on Oric, in terms of color usage and careful attention to the art of attribute management .. the gameplay is meh, but I thoroughly look forward to what the future might bring in raxiss’ workbench, vis-a-vis those funky attributes ..

(For sure, you could replace the static squares with bitmaps and bring some character design into the existing flat interface .. however the flat interface is not without its charms ..)

I'm sure Rax has the skills to make the game visually different, but the thing is that this is canonically how this game looks like, it's literally a zoomed representation of a flood-fill with zoomed in pixels, putting some bitmap or artwork in the play area would probably just make it more difficult to see the grid pattern and where to go to fill.

That being said, the area outside the pixels grid can be altered without impacting the gameplay, so adding some flair around it would probably be just fine, but I guess he was going for some commonality: All these small games have the same grid pattern on the back.

I mean, I totally understand the game is flat for a reason, but the technique rax has used to gain the colors, is very inspiring and leads the Oric hackers mind to wander ..

Yes, the game is “flat” because I tried to stay as close as possible to the original concept.

That is exactly the core idea: the playfield is meant to be a literal, zoomed-in flood-fill, so the grid itself is the subject. Any attempt to turn the pixels into symbols or textured tiles would probably work against readability and the whole meaning of the concept. I really like how both of you described it: this is not just a stylistic choice, but part of the “canon” of what Flood-it represents.

You are also right about the area around the grid – that is where some personality can live without harming clarity. The shared background across the small games was also a deliberate choice, as a kind of visual thread that ties them together.

In any case, this is still very much an experiment. The truth is that I already have a few more games almost finished, and I’m trying to experiment with different ideas in each one. Most of the time I just implement whatever comes to mind – the different perspectives come from the comments you give.

if you have ideas I would listen to them :)
