Game map design of "He is coming"

The Oric video chip is not an easy beast to master, so any trick or method that allows to achieve nice visual results is welcome. Don't hesitate to comment (nicely) other people tricks and pictures :)

Game map design of "He is coming"

Post by Dbug »

I just saw the presentation of a rogue like game, and I realized that the way the map was done, with a lot of black spacing between the elements, it would almost work on the Oric as a way to insert attributes to have individually colored elements :)

I did a little test, what would such a mode look like.
What do you think?

That looks very nice... but I think both rivers and roads should appear connected without the black spacing.

I guess if there’s a player on the map, the attributes in front of each tile would mean movement has to be grid-based.
But if it’s just a map visualization, I think it’ll look fine.

Here are a few more example visuals without the tile attributes.

Definitely better with colors :)

Obviously the suggestion of connecting the rivers/roads is only for when there's nothing else at this location: Basically if two consecutive river or road elements are visible side by side (ie: Without a player or monster on one of them) then just add a connection so it does look like a road you can follow, but if there's something on it, then it's fine to have black on the left and right of it :)
