Doom would not have been period correct: The action happens in September 1982 :)

Small update for the Donkey Kong.

Compared to the previous version there are now scores and lives, the dynamic character set is working properly, timings have been tweaked (still far from perfect), the platforms are now slanted instead of horizontal, there are new sprites for the crane and kong, the crane control box now indicates the player what to do.

Fantastic addition. While playing the earlier version, I was looking for such an easter egg. This game is like a good wine, it keeps improving with time :D

I love how it's coming along and the idea of playing it at Encounter itself.

I'm very close to have a releasable version of the mini-game, mostly need to tweak some timings, load/save the high-score, and properly make it possible to play the game from an interaction.

Here is what it looked like as of yesterday where I worked on the high-score system.

Also the latest issue of BrewOtaku, #006 has a review of Encounter with a 85% "BrewScore".
Conclusion:
Encounter HD is a standout homage to the golden age of gaming, crafted with care and precision for the Oric Atmos.
With a captivating plot, clever design, and plenty of classic charm, it’s an irresistible trip down memory lane.
Adventurers, prepare for an unforgettable journey.
Could be worse :D

Version 1.2 is out on both itch.io and Steam.

So the fully playable Monkey King minigame is now in the game, both the "slow" and "fast" scores are saved to disk, the best score made during the game session is added to your final Encounter game score, and there are two new achievements associated to that.

Regarding the future of the project:

Code: Select all

Remaining space = ($9900 - *) = 1023
Successfully created '..\build\EncounterHD-FR-60HZ-v1.2.0.dsk' - Disk capacity: 378 KB (42 tracks x 18 sectors x 2 sides x 256 bytes) - Current usage: 136 files, 369 KB (1477 sectors x 256 bytes) - 97% of the total disk size used - Available capacity: 8 KB (8960 Bytes)
So basically I have one kilobyte of RAM free in the game, and 8KB free on the disk.

I think I will try to see if I can get ISS port of the QR code generator in the outro so players can share their scores online, and/or maybe I can add a couple images like when investigating the some items like the well or the trashcans, but that's about it, so statistically I guess in like one month I will call it "done" and that will be it :)

Just having fun using the remaining disk space.

You can now inspect the well

And since "Dune: Awakening" (the game I worked on at work) launches tomorrow, decided to add a reference to Dune.

encounter_dune_book.gif

This is the 1965 UK edition of the book from Gollancz, it's a bit wormed-out because the game action happens in 1982, so in 17 years the book has seen quite a lot of action! And David Lynch movie was released in 1984, so it makes sense that people know that the movie is in the works :)

Thanks :)

And I guess I've reach the final version.

I now have 1024 bytes available on disk and about 860 bytes available in the game, I'm going to keep that in reserve in case some big bug is found so I have a bit of margin to work, but that's it.

So I'm going to build a new version, push it to Steam and Itch, and then make it available on Oric.org as a free download.

This is enough space to display: "PLEASE INSERT ENCOUNTER DISK 2, AND PRESS "......

Very nice game indeed! Wondering how many people really realize how much work it is.

Thanks for sharing DBug. May be i'll dig into the code to learn some technics.
Despite it's a huge piece of work you've done with i'm sure a lot of targets to achieve to let the player happy to play, i don't think i'll play it as i've too many things to do.

Its a very nice codebase to read, if you don't have a lot of time for game playing but do have time for code reading, the repo is quite fun to explore.

There are spoilers, of course, too. Those might actually help you play the game a bit more (as in my case) .. ;)
