Stratospheric Bidding for a Telestrat

Post by jacqu »

Hi!,

I suppose some of you also followed the auction on eBay of a Telestrat in impeccable condition along with a Microdisc, which reached the stratospheric price of €4010!

It feels like a record for this type of machine, doesn’t it?

That is an incredible price. Seems unbelievable, but I guess it must be in great condition.

Sure wish the folks who buy these things would join the community.

That's indeed a crazy price.

Probably going to some rich collector to sit on some shelves in a trophy room.

prices have soared on this auction
too few telestrats on sale explains this completely disconcerted craze

I bought my telestrat in a boxed version like this for around 1300€ about 1-2 years ago

Just for the sake of interest, I'd like to know what the Telestrat owners actually think of the machine in the context of both "successor to the Oric 1 and Atmos", as well as the machine itself ignoring any backward compatibility related concern.

Have you used the machine or did you just keep it boxed on a shelf :) ?

I wanted to love it, as a long-time Oric-1 fan who lusted (from a vast distance) over any and all upgrades the Oric was rumored to have "any day now", so when I finally got an Atmos I was definitely happy with the new hardware - but when I got the Telestrat, with its hacked together disc system, I was a lot less satisfied. The MIDI port didn't work! (The only thing I really wanted to play with.) And not just that, I managed to fry it by plugging in the wrong disc subsystem .. and I have yet to get around to fixing that, yet.

I've been close to selling it myself a few times, but I still hold out hope that I'll find the time/place to do a repair and boot it up again .. I still want to find out what TELE-ASS is all about .. ;)

Imagine a Telestrat replacement motherboard which basically would be:
- 100% Oric Atmos + Microdisc compatible
- Built in IJK joystick to replace the non-sense ports
- Fully working MIDI port
- And then the additional VIA for the memory banking and cartridge stuff

Between the Twilighte/Orixx card and the existing modern interfaces, it's probably possible to do that and get it to fit into the existing case without drilling or cutting anything.

No, of course note, just saying that imo there's no point trying to fix the actual Telestrats to make them usable, there are too many rough edges and hacks to make them really as people would have liked them to be, but there's potential for replacement parts (like the DIY Atmos, etc...) to make the Telestrat that was advertised back then.

Heck, now that the ULA is fully documented, it would be possible to have the mythical ULA 2.0 with the 80 columns mode :)

That mythical ULA/80-columns mode is very appealing, but I think LOCI is going to give the Atmos the upgrades it really needs .. as soon as we get modem/serial/MIDI support, joystick support, networking and so on .. ;)
