Confused about the tape cable Oric Atmos

If you want to ask questions about how the machine works, peculiar details, the differences between models, here it is !
How to program the oric hardware (VIA, FDC, ...) is also welcome.

Confused about the tape cable Oric Atmos

Post by toncho11 »

I have this tape cable:

1) First I am not sure which one should be connected to my phone for uploading games. It should be "E" or "M".
2) The connectors do not look like standard audio mono jacks. They are similar, but not the same. The connectors on the photo M and E kind of have double head. They do not enter well in my phone (not fully). I imagine they are designed for a specific cassette recorder? Is this observation correct?

I would like to adapt this cable in order to use it with my phone or MP3/WAV player.

First, welcome here! :D
It's a guess but IMHO, E = Ear, M = Microphone, T = Tape relay.
This connectors are exactly 3.5 mm audio mono jacks!
But for a decent phone/player you need a different one.
Be careful you can break you phone!
Check this picture...
You can try TapOric too ;).

I agree with iss. EAR and MIC were quite standard for other computers (speccy). For loading you should connect the EAR.

The tape relay (TAP) is for remote control of the tape player, not needed here.

Cellphones usually use stereo connectors even with volume control. You may want to check for adaptors, if yours does not work with these plugs.

Thank you both!

Below are two connectors:

Black one on the RIGHT is mine and it does not fully enter my phone and it does not work.
The red one on the LEFT is borrowed from a friend and it does work. It can enter with a little bit of push.

You can see that there is some slight difference in the connectors. So my question is:

So it should be OK to buy a new mono 3.5 mm audio jack from Amazon and replace the E on my cable with it?

The problem with old cables is that they often have problems: Broken wires inside, bad soldering, damaged connectors, etc...

There are some brand new cables available for the machine, maybe worth it?
See for example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/321775032876

Whatever you choose to do, do not force in the jack that doesn't enter.
I once had such a problem and forced it, thinking "come on, a jack is a jack", but I couldn't remove it afterwards! I had to pull like crazy and damaged the female plug (only cosmetic damage luckily).
