Vista and euphoric: incompatible ?

Comments, problems, suggestions about Oric emulators (Euphoric, Mess, Amoric, etc...) it's the right place to ask. And don't hesitate to give your tips and tricks that help using these emulations in the best possible way on your favorite operating system.

Post by maximus »

hi all, i've got a new PC, a lenovo, it works perfect

but with Vista, euphoric doesn't run at all :?

actually, like millions of people in the world, i cannot play with Oric Games :?

some says > use multiboot system, perhaps dosbox is ok

hum too difficult for most people, noob like me.

i think it's the greatest problem for Oric future

I will hide my feelings toward this wonderful new operating system from Microsoft, and try to be helpful :)

- Have you tried running it through the command line to see if there is some informative error message ?

- Have you tried playing with the compatibility options ?

- Have you tried Caloric for windows ?

Well, I would say that euphoric could work in VISTA if and only if the new video drivers scheme would not be what it is...

The thing is that alike with many other DOS programs you will have this wonderfull : "This system does not support full screen mode".

It is a side-effect of Vista's new WDDM ("Windows
Display Driver Model") graphics drivers. WDDM drivers in Vista do not
support full-screen mode for DOS apps.

Why ? Because :
1) DOS programs are not allowed by the Vista graphic drivers to enter Full screen mode.
2) Resolutions lower than 640x480 are no longer implemented in Vista graphic drivers.

So... The only way to run Euphoric is to change or use different graphic drivers.

1st solution :
You install XP graphic drivers instead of Vista Graphic drivers (I swear it works).

2nd solution :
You use standard VGA drivers that come with VISTA : If you press "F8" at boot and select "VGA Mode" can you see the screen?
You can also run your vista in "Safe mode", enabling VGA drivers.
I know it is not very handly but do you have the choice ?

I resume :
The workaround is to use a non-WDDM graphics driver. The standard VGA Driver supplied with Vista uses an XPDM ("XP Driver Model"), so it does not have the same limitation.
Also, graphics drivers designed for XP rather than Vista, can often permit a full-screen DOS app. Of course, you'll loose all the goofy, whizz-bang Aero graphics in Vista, by using an older driver - but your application can still run.

At last, thhe other solution, is to create a double boot, installing a second OS.
You can, for instance, intall XP, or freedos : http://www.freedos.org/
It will run on your brand new PC, and there are also some nice Graphical User Interfaces with it in order to be in a Windows like environment.

Finally, I wonder if it is possible to install Freedos on an USB Key with euphoric on it, and boot from the USB Key.
I know there exist some USB drivers for FreeDos, but I never gave a try to this possibility.

At last, if you want an bootable USB Key running MSDOS, follow this tutorial :

Or download this tool made by HP :

I guess somebody could also try to do an installer for Euphoric+DosBox pre-installing everything in one fancy package...

Yep. I think that would be a good solution.

However, in the meantime, I would suggest using virtualPC with MS-DOS. It works quite well, even with sound. Unless under XP, but I guess it would also under Vista.

hmmm... The only concerns with DosBox is that :
- it is soooooooo slowwwwww....
- Most of all, fullscreen is like for Euphoric, not allowed (try it !)

http://revolf.free.fr/oric/Caloric.win32.test.zip
