Cumulus Preorder Thread

In this forum you can write about anything that does not fit in other forums.
This includes generic Oric talkings and things that are totaly unrelated but want to share with people here :)

Boris posted a link to a similar EU power supply that will work in France.
Hopefully, the voltage between the UK and the mainland are the same (230-240V)

But yes the socket is not the same, but coverter exists and they are cheap :)

Voltage is the same in UK but the plug is different.
My powersupply has the "Europlug (Type C)" and takes 100-240V as input. Only the UK has a diffenrent plug in europe.
but the seller from the ebaylink is really cheap! :)

Must have been thinking of US voltage for some reason. Still, both types are available so it makes sense to just buy the right one to begin with.

Hi all

Is it too late to order a disk drive? (EDIT: Cumulus is not a *disk* drive, it's a disk drive *emulator*)

I would order one if it is possible. (EDIT: Done)

Thanks in advance
Regards

Will it work with Pravetz-8D?

The Pravetz has been so far about as compatible as the common Oric Atmos or Oric 1 (Standard Microdisc units work fine on the Pravetz), so technically I don't see why Cumulus would not work on it; that being said some of the issues reported on some of the Oric models have been linked to specific types of memory chips, so there could be a similar issue laying hidden out there.

Will it work with Pravetz-8D?
After long postponing I tried Cumulus with Pravetz-8D here is the result:
- connected properly and 3 times checked :)
- power on Pravetz - freezed on memory pattern (i.e. black/white vertical stripes on screen)
- Cumulus works allowing to select image from SDCard
- 'reset' from Cumulus menu does nothing
- power-off and power-on again - on screen the same result - Cumulus is DEAD! :(
There is back light on Cumulus LCD but no menu...
So, probably I'm unlucky but be careful with Pravetz-8D.

Now I need some help to try to fix my Cumulus - what is the purpose of the two connectors inside Cumulus box?
If there is UART or RS232 (or JTAG) I need pin description - just to see if there's some response...

Oh God! That is bad luck indeed. You fried your Cumulus?

Sounds strange, as it is powered from the Oric's bus, but who knows. I suggest you post this in the Cumulus issues thread and see if someone helps.

Indeed, vary bad luck!
I found some schematics on retromaster's site and it looks the same what I see on PCB.
There is a connector for PIC programming and I have the right programmer, so I'll check it first.

Oh... sounds not good.
But you can try to flash a new bootloader on the PIC and then install the firmware from the sd-card. all you need is a pic burner like the pickit from microchip.
PicKit2 connector: http://people.virginia.edu/~ll2bf/docs/ ... pinout.png
Pin1 is marked on the PCB (Where the P3 is).
Be careful and use only 3.3V!

I use this burner: http://www.sprut.de/electronic/pic/brenner/#brenner8
If you need help let me know.

Thanks, metadata!
I have pickit-3 (and can find pickit-2 too). I'll try to resurrect my Cumulus.
If the PIC is broken I can even replace it.
Anyway, burning things is important part of the fun :D ...

Did you open the Pravetz? I never managed to plug the Cumulus on mine because there was no room for it.

About your problem, I suppose you already checked but one never knows: the motherboard is upside-down on my Pravetz, did you plug the cumulus accordingly? (no offense intended  )

@Symon: yes, my Pravetz is open since 26 years :).
And yes, the moterboard is normally with components up, so CumulusBus should be plugged with chips down.
I checked everything (common GND, +5V) with multimeter before power on.
Interesting in my Pravetz is that the printer connector is with 90deg bent pins and can be used when motherboard
is in the box, but the expansion connector is with straight pins - no way to be accessed with closed box.
Btw, after the unhappy test with Cumulus, Pravetz still work normally with Cumana, Microdisc and all 8D controllers I have.

There seems to be some omissions in the preorder list; I see people stating that they have received their unit, but they are not in the preorder list?
How far down on the preorder list are we now?
