Building a microdisc compatible controller

This is the right place to discuss on how to implement hardware vsync, adding a VIA or AY chipset, puting multiple roms, or how to design a new flash expansion card.

Building a microdisc compatible controller

Post by Dbug »

Sometime ago, Thierry Bestel made a new disk controller board based on the original oric microdisc design. Schematics and explanations about how to build this card have been published (in french) in the CEO Mag (numbers 147, 149 and 150).

Somebody (Jean-Claude Bridier) decided to start building such a board, so for the convenience we put the article pages as downloadable PDF files here:

http://www.defence-force.org/computing/ ... microdisc/

In this folder you will also find the two BMP files that can be used to create the circuit board.

Concerning components, it seems they are still available at JMB Electronique.

Here is the link to their catalog:
http://www.JMB-Electronique.com/Tarif0904.pdf

For more exotic/rare components they need to be contacted directly. At this date (january 2006) the prices were the following:
- 4.13 euros (taxes included) for the FDC1793
- 4.11 euros (taxes included) for the FDC9216B

question

Post by romualdl »

Hi there,

So juste some question:

-has someone (appart from the guys who made the reissue board) made this controller and is it ok?
I know the information might be somewhere on CEO mag but I don't have them anymore (even the electronic version).

Regards
Romu

Here an update about the status of the board.
Jean Claude managed to get the circuit board made:

Une petite mise à jour de JC:

Voici la photo de l'implantation des composants, la prochaine étape est la mise sous tension de la carte. A suivre.........

Hello,

You can't buy it. You must build it :)

Indeed as Jede wrote you need to build it.
All the information was posted in the first message with a link to the board graphics, component list, etc...

Unfortunately, I'm not into Electronics.

Thanks, anyway!

The problem is that to make the from this source board is too difficult. You must transfer the BMP to plate. You could use laser printing and then transfer the image using transfer press. After that you must drill all the wholes. Then you must connect the two sides of every via. The PCB company could not use the image, it wants gerbers and drill file. I will talk with them if they are agree to transfer the image using transparent film (I could exponate it). After that I must drill the wholes. And after that I will back to them to metalize them... Not ezasy but possible...

If somebody manage to make a better pcb layout, I can host the files as well.

I have entered the Microdisc schematics (attached file), but I'm not sure if it's correct. I have checked it several times, comparing with known schematics on the net and with an old microdisc controller. But I have no success when I try to make a PCB. It is useful if someone help to find the mistake.
