Looks like a homemade case, maybe. Original Byte Drive came with two boxes.

Picture attached should show what it should look like. Byte Drive is in the middle next to a Jasmin drive.
(Sorry it's low quality. )

If you read the links from the wiki posted above by Polluks, one of them is a forum discussion ending with a message from the designer of the drive.
He clearly says all the controller part was in the cable.

So if you buy this drive without the cable, you just buy... A drive.

Yes you can see the cable interface in my photo sitting on top of the drive.

Aha, how do you connect the V23?

It goes in the expansion port, so if you have a disk system you need to connect a socket on the ribbon cable so that you can have both attached.

I'm not sure if there are any BBS system left which you could log on to with a modem though. (?)

It's just the keyboard and motherboard separated out. The keyboard has the numeric keypad added. (I think it was called a numerator or something. You'll see adverts in ThéOric for it.)
I think someone thought it'd make for a better keyboard and look cool. I'#m not sure if the keypad needed any software or if it just connected to the existing circuit.

I think it was called calculator. IIRC it allowed (or at least a further version) a joystick to be plugged, too.
Fabrice Francès was looking for one to emulate it in Euphoric - don't know if he still does!
