Is Cumulus dead?

This is the right place to discuss on how to implement hardware vsync, adding a VIA or AY chipset, puting multiple roms, or how to design a new flash expansion card.

Is Cumulus dead?

Post by JonB »

Hi

I put my name down for a Cumulus long ago, on both the original threads, but have heard nothing.

What is going on? I don't visit often.

Cheers

Hello, JonB

If you mean the original list for those units being mounted by metadata, yes: he is not making them anymore. He has no more free time for this (at least for now). The original version had some issues on some Orics, in which the cumulus simply did not work (and I think that could be one of the reasons why he did not want to build more).

Metadata only mounted them, the design was done by Retromaster and all the data and files needed to build them are in the repository here:
http://miniserve.defence-force.org/svn/ ... e/cumulus/

There has been one attempt to create a new version by Godzil, but that is a project for the future.

In fact, in my opinion the most reliable way to get a disk unit is by getting one of the Microdisc clones and attaching a floppy emulator.

Jorodor made some http://forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=953 and also Silicebit is currently building them, but I'm afraid it is the las batch he is building (I have one of these) http://forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1306 .

Drop a message on one of those threads, if interested.

The Cumulus Rev2 is not dead, I'm just lacking time and money to work on it right now, and as Chema says as the original one proved to be unreliable, it is a redesign, the Rev1 will be hard as it is to update to correct the flaws.

So please either buy a microdisc replica with a floppy emulator like the HxC or be patient for the Cumulus Rev2, the project is not dead at all.
