Alchimie 0xb in Tain l’Hermitage (26) France

Post by Hialmar »

I found some old messages about the tenth edition (in 2013) so I figured it would interest people to know that the 11th (0xb in hexa) is coming soon.

This year it will happen from the 13th to the 15th of November.

It's mainly about Amiga but there is room for any old computer and alternative systems.

Infos (in french) are here:
http://www.triplea.fr/alchimie/pages/index.php

And there is a video about the 10th edition:

Alternatively: $b for those who like assembly :)

Have a good time, those going and don't forget to post some pictures about the event. Mainly if there are some Orics there!

Depends on the assembler, some use 0Bh instead :)

It's mine with Silicebit's awesome controller.

There was another one with a cumulus.

Great!

Btw which PSU are you using? I see you are powering the controller, the drive and the Oric! I am using an old PC PSU which is bulky and noisy...

Sound like a generic switching power supply, maybe a laptop one

I've bought one like this one.
I didn't have had time to try this power source. If it works, it's easier to install than a pc one.

It's a PSU I got with an IDE/SATA to USB adapter:
http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Convertisseur-ID ... 0754501169

I'm unsure of the quality of the output though. I had some problems with it during the Alchimie and before. I will need to test it more.

I may end up creating something specific with a Pico PSU.

I doubt it is a problem with the quality, it is a modern PSU after all. Maybe with amperage... I read somewhere that a floppy drive can take 0.7mA depending on the operation (older FDDs may need more), the Oric needs 0.6mA. The controller should not need much, but if the PSU is below 2A, it might be too close.

As a side note, I think Silicebit made some tests and some Orics did not work very well when powered through the controller (?).

For other random disk errrors, it might just be a matter of (slightly) adjusting the variable resitor.

... and here is how it looks from inside:

This is the first one I've bought (as Hialmar part of IDE/SATA adapter).
It was very cheap and it burned immediately after plugging.
Than I've bought second one - more expensive, but with
"better feel on touch" and it works perfect.
So, be careful for fakes when buying - it can be very dangerous too.
