remakes of Oric games

Comments, problems, suggestions about Oric emulators (Euphoric, Mess, Amoric, etc...) it's the right place to ask. And don't hesitate to give your tips and tricks that help using these emulations in the best possible way on your favorite operating system.

remakes of Oric games

Post by jotd »

Hi,

I've found a method to port rather easily Oric games to C + SDL code. This requires some manual steps, but I've made a successful attempt and I intend to reiterate the operation.

The first game I have targeted is Xenon 1.

I have started work on january the 18th from scratch and a native version of Xenon 1 is already available (without sound) for the PC Windows (Linux and other SDL platforms would be perfectly possible too)

Check ery early version of the game + screenshots here:

Impressive... How are you doing this? Are you emulating Oric's hardware somehow? At least the screen?

Only the screen. CPU is simulated through C macros.

What about Pulsoids? :P

I downloaded Xenon1 and it has some great sound effects. Well done, this made me really chuckle :)

I know the game only by reputation (but knowing its author it must be very good :)). I must try it with Euphoric.

I'm glad you liked Xenon 1. I just finished Zorgon too BTW: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/jotd/zorgon/index.html

PS: what about a doc for Magnetix? :)

Wow fantastic. :D

Just played them both, brings back fond memories.

A job well done, can't wait till other classics get converted.

Yicker
thanks. Which brings the next question/poll:

Which games are sufficiently original and oric-unique and would be worth converting/updating ?

Defence Force is awesome but looks like PacMan a lot (errr wait... no).

I would suggest:

- Frelon
- The Ultra
- Ratsplat
- Bering

What would be really great, is to have a "save/resume"functionality.

For the typical unique Oric games, I can suggest "L'aigle d'Or" and "Axayacatl" :)

Hehe, you will have 5045942034 games to convert if you ask us :)
To complete the list, some games I do love:
- The Hellion
- Le Fer d'Amnukor
- Don't Press The Letter Q
- Zebbie

Other classics:
- 3D Fongus
- Le Diamant de l'Ile Maudite
- Trouble In Store
- Roland Garros
- Driver
- Doggy
- Tyrann
- Manic Miner
- Triathlon
- Xenon III (maybe)
...

And there are of course loads of interesting "recent" games (from the 90' and 2000') which are not "classics" because released once Oric was dead, but that are very interesting.

Manic Miner is not an Oric classic. It's a classic which happen to have been ported on the Oric ;)

First, it's not because a game is good that it's worth a remake. I don't see the point of remaking Le Diamant de l'Ile Maudite or Tyrann.
Second, some are not originals: Driver is a Rally-X (arcade) clone.

Triathlon is good but is just another sports game, even if the events are original, Xenon III would be logical since I made the 2 first ones, but I did not know the game, and I don't particularly like it.
Doggy also rules, although playability has aged...
I don't know the other games, not even 3D Fongus (!) That's because when I bought it the cassette was not working on my player so I swapped it for Sorvivor instead (aaaaarghhh what a mistake!!)

About the "new" games, if the authors wanted to do it on PC, they had the possibility. So no way.

Ok, my "likely" candidate list:

- Zebbie (although it's a text mode game so not smooth scrolling!)
- L'Aigle D'Or (I would have to greatly improve my basic to C converter!)
- The Hellion
- Bering (seems that only I like this one :))
- Frelon
- The Ultra
- Rat Splat
- Ultima Zone

Ooops, I read that too quickly and kept in mind "oric classics" when I gave my answer !
So my list could be shortened to:
Zebbie
The Hellion (thought it's just another shoot-them-up game, it has loads of funny references)
Don't Press The Letter Q (totally original and Oric-only, although an Amiga version was made by Andrew Moore, but not published).

L'Aigle d'Or was ported to other platforms like MO5, with more rooms, as designed originally by the author. He had to initially remove them from the Oric version because of memory limitation !
