Re: Novalight - very fast tape loading

Ok, by loading bytes on screen, I've been able to understand the beginning of something: it's actually not the timing problem I was thinking of, but a silence between two sub-parts that causes a wrong reading of the following byte, on real machines only. The same silence that, IIRC, I had tried to r...

Re: Novalight - very fast tape loading

The decoding is probably too demanding, there's actually only a 3µs margin left on emulators, and I suppose real hardware doesn't cope with it. Hey, that's a difference between real machines and emulators ;) Is this the case for all emulators? Out of curiosity which ones did you try? Also, I guess ...

Re: Novalight - very fast tape loading

Couldn't help trying again ;) And got a prototpye of Novalight 1.3 to work on Oricutron and Euphoric... But not on a real Oric. The decoding is probably too demanding, there's actually only a 3µs margin left on emulators, and I suppose real hardware doesn't cope with it. Hey, that's a difference bet...

Re: Oric on VGA monitors

I'm curious to know more about your circuit - as a potential user, not as an electronics expert ;)

Not sure this may help, but just for the record: before emulators, I had never, ever seen a real circle on Oric. On 4/3 TVs, they already were ellipses. That was using Scart on CRT TVs, in France.

Re: CC65 to DSK

That's very nice!
Only question is the effect of the color attibute clash when cars will be close to each other?
I always have admiration for games authors that decide to work in colors on Oric. Alistair Way's Grand Prix kept the cars monochrom! ;)

This greyscale demo is amazing. Very smart example of a new usage!

Re: Twilighte's software list

By digging into Twilighte's archives, looking for a TAP version of Zebulon (to no avail), I found an early in-the-works version of Attack Of The Mutant Camels. Only scrolling and background. I had to change one or two things to set up a disk version. Is there any thread dedicated to unreleased Twili...

Re: Novalight - very fast tape loading

Giving up Novalight 1.3. Its main goal was to try reducing the Oric working time to save a decoded byte in memory by 1 sample (22.67µs). This also opened a door to extend the dictionary. But timings are too short for real machines. It worked at 95% on emulators, but definitely doesn't on real Orics....

Re: Opcode 52 executed at 024D

I would bet for a zero page variable not initialized somewhere? This is actually very portable, "normal", C, which does not do anything Oric specific and is extremely unlikely to contain any bugs. And sometimes, just adding a printf() here and there makes it work... I have no idea how the code gene...

Re: Thoughts about WAV tapes repository

That's what I'm doing "manually" with a hex editor once TAP files are converted: trying all the recordings on tape and comparing them. Some will have mistakes, different garbage between parts if you don't convert each part separtely, some will be different but both good (slow version with ",S" / fas...

Re: Thoughts about WAV tapes repository

I wonder if it's possible to do a decent software alternative to the hardware "tape filter thingy" box, basically some "WaveClean++", you would record a tape, pass it through the software and it would regenerate a new wave file with normalized volume output, nicely spaced out values, fixed stereo i...

Re: Thoughts about WAV tapes repository

To me the only safe way to go is to use Fabrice's Tape Tools, on Sourceforge. They require a PC using Windows. Make a WAV, make a TAP from it with Wavclean and Wav2tap (this checks loading errors!), generate back a WAV file with Tap2wav. Of course this won't work with special routines. I was working...

Re: Novalight - very fast tape loading

Okay, so the new version is promising but not working yet, and not sure it will. Loading time saved on Zorgon would be more than 1 second :) So far, "normal" (uncompressed) bytes seem to load correctly, but I have bugs and not been able to check yet if it's a global timing problem, or specific to co...
